  • life transitions
  • stress and burn-out

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if individual therapy is right for me?

Individual therapy can be helpful if you're feeling overwhelmed, stuck, anxious, low, or navigating a difficult life situation. You don't need to be in crisis. Many people come simply to better understand themselves, improve relationships, or grow personally.

What happens in the first session?

Your first session is a chance to get to know each other. We'll talk about what's bringing you in, your goals, and your history. We may get into background information including childhood, family dynamics and past relationships, so that we can better understand your experiences and context, and so support you better.

How long does therapy take?

This varies depending on your goals. Some clients come for a few sessions to work through a specific issue, while others engage in longer-term therapy for deeper personal growth. We'll collaborate on a plan that works for you.

How often will we meet?

Most clients start with weekly sessions, especially at the beginning. As things improve, sessions may become biweekly or more flexible.

Is everything I say confidential?

Yes absolutely! Confidentiality is a core part of therapy. There are a few legal exceptions (such as risk of harm to yourself or others, or concerns about a child's safety), which your therapist will review with you.

What if I don't know what to talk about?

That's completely okay. Many people come in unsure of where exactly to start. Your therapist will gently guide the conversation and help you to explore what feels most important.

Will therapy give me advice or tell me what to do?

Therapy is less about giving advice and more about helping you gain clarity, insight, and tools so that you can make decisions that align with your values. That said, your therapist may offer strategies, reflections, and guidance when helpful.

What types of issues can individual therapy help with?

Individual therapy can support a wide range of concerns, including:

  • Anxiety and stress
  • Depression or low mood
  • Life transitions
  • Relationship challenges
  • Self-esteem and identity
  • Burnout
  • Trauma or past experiences
How do I get the most out of therapy?

Being open, honest, and willing to reflect (even when it's uncomfortable) can make a big difference. Change doesn't happen overnight, but consistent effort during and between sessions helps.

What if I feel nervous or unsure about starting?

That's ok and quite normal. Starting therapy can feel vulnerable. You're welcome to go at your own pace. Your therapist will meet you with care, not pressure.

Can I combine individual therapy with couples therapy?

Absolutely! Many people benefit from doing both, and there can be deeper and accelerated work when doing both. Individual therapy can help you process your own experiences while couples therapy focuses on the relationship dynamic. With your written permission, your individual therapist can also connect with your couples therapist to provide further support and collaboration.

Do you offer virtual sessions?

Yes, we offer secure virtual sessions, making it easy to access support from the comfort of your home. We also offer services in-person in Mississauga and Sarnia.
